Description:

Oakland native Marcus Gardley is one of our most sensitive and playful interpreters of living legacies. Says Gardley, "…and Jesus Moonwalks the Mississippi is in a lot of ways my signature play. It is based on a story my great-grandmother used to tell, about her father who fled the bonds of slavery and traveled the country in search of his family." As he did in his recent hit black odyssey, Gardley stitches Greek myth, Black folklore, Biblical riffs, Civil War history and child's play into an American quilt of pain and grace.

Distinguished Artist in Residence Ken Prestininzi (Chaste) returns to Saint Mary's to direct this production, which features vocalists Michelle Jacques and members of CHELLE's Juke Joint.
