Academic Distinctions

During the 2019-20 academic year, Saint Mary’s once again received high rankings by several of the nation’s most prestigious and notable publications. The College is proud that we continue to be placed in such high esteem for excellence in higher education, which speaks directly to the commitment of our outstanding faculty and their deep dedication to our students. 

Saint Mary’s is honored to have moved up to the number five-ranked position by U.S. News and World Report in the Best Regional Universities-West category. "We are extremely proud of our recognition as one of the top five Best Regional Universities in the West by U.S. News and World Report," said President James Donahue. "This acknowledgment of academic excellence clearly underscores the distinctiveness of Saint Mary's as an outstanding comprehensive university, rooted in a Lasallian Catholic mission and liberal arts tradition that educates our students to lead meaningful and rewarding personal and professional lives.” U.S. News and World Report also ranked the College number three in the West for Best Regional College for Veterans and among the top 15 schools in the Campus Ethnic Diversity-West category. 

Similarly, the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education 2019 College Rankings ranked Saint Mary’s among the top 20 percent of U.S. Colleges and Universities. “These rankings are a true affirmation of the College’s academic distinctiveness,” said Interim Executive Vice President Margaret Kasimatis. “They also underscore the College’s Catholic, Lasallian mission, and liberal arts traditions that enable our students to think critically and flourish intellectually in an inclusive environment where the focus on student engagement and success is unwavering.” 

Saint Mary’s is likewise proud to have been ranked by The Princeton Review as being among The Best 385 Colleges in the nation. Saint Mary’s also achieved the stellar honor of being included in the Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges: 2019 Edition, where the College ranked among the top green schools in the nation. Additional honors included receiving the Gold Sustainability Award from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, a first for Saint Mary’s.
