President’s Message

SMC Gaels Are Resilient

Dear Saint Mary’s Community,

It is a turbulent time in the world, nation, and our College’s history, and yet one characteristic we hope to have embodied in the 2019–20 academic year is resilience.

Saint Mary’s College has always demonstrated a remarkable capacity to adapt and advance, and this year was no different. All that is happening around us will not deter our passion and commitment to providing the outstanding transformative education that students deserve while embracing our Lasallian core values as a community.

I am enormously grateful to our faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, administrators, and Board of Trustees for demonstrating extraordinary creativity, flexibility, and persistence during this unprecedented year we will not forget. As we address the serious issues we face, we must also celebrate our achievements.

First, I would like to acknowledge the generosity of our donors. The 2019–2020 fiscal year included fundraising and engagement highs for the College, even as we faced unprecedented challenges that tested our resolve and tenacity.

In December 2019, Saint Mary's successfully concluded the historic Defining the Future: The Campaign for Saint Mary's, raising approximately $136 million for College priorities from almost 30,000 donors. In addition to funds raised for priorities linked to College operations, academic excellence, and our Lasallian, Catholic mission, we secured $54.6M for capital projects, $32.1M for scholarships, and $29.4M for Athletics.

The second half of the year brought obstacles we could not predict. Still, our community of alumni, donors, and volunteers revealed their true Gael loyalty and pride by engaging in multiple virtual events and providing critical support for Saint Mary's as the College navigated through its COVID-19 response. We closed the year with $18.8 million in new commitments, including adding $3.3 million to the endowment, $2.7 million for capital priorities, and $517,450 for enrollment incentives for fall 2020 to help new fall 2020 students impacted by COVID-19.

The total for new commitments in FY20 was: $18,855,569.

Most importantly, the commitment of our faculty and staff, along with our generous donors, enabled us to close the year in a strong financial position. We remain grateful for the steadfast and generous support shown to Saint Mary's by so many Gaels—thank you!

This report highlights the 2019–2020 academic year showcasing the myriad ways Saint Mary’s builds on its Lasallian, Catholic, and liberal arts traditions in distinctive and innovative ways to achieve academic excellence and continues to have a transformative impact on our students even during these unpredictable times.
