Anthony Garrison-Engbrecht named Vice President for Student Life

Dear Saint Mary’s Community,

I am pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Anthony Garrison-Engbrecht as our new Vice President for Student Life.

Anthony brings a wealth of experience and energy from several California institutions, including his most recent position at UC Merced as the Senior Advisor and Chief of Staff for the Division of Student Affairs. He was a key strategist on matters of long-term and strategic planning, resource allocation, personnel matters, divisional processes and policy. Prior to UC Merced, Anthony served as Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the Leadership, Engagement, Advising, & Development Center at the University of California, Berkeley and, prior to that, the Director of Leadership Programs and LGBT Student Services at Loyola Marymount University.

Anthony, originally from Kansas, received his bachelor in sociology from Loyola University New Orleans, a master’s in educational psychology from Pepperdine University, and a master’s in Theology from Loyola Marymount University. He completed his Ph.D. in Education with an emphasis in Culture and Curriculum at Chapman University.

Thank you to Evette Castillo Clark for a wonderful collaborative job serving as Interim Vice Provost for Student Life. I would also like to thank members of the search committee, Mike Matoso, Jen Herzog, Dai To, Corey Cook, Hampton Cantrell, and Frances Sweeney, for reviewing all the applicants and bringing three, talented finalists to campus.

Please join me in welcoming Anthony when he begins his tenure at Saint Mary’s on August 23.

Best regards,

Richard Plumb, PhD
