Ash Wednesday — 2 March 2022

Dear Saint Mary’s Community,

On Wednesday, March 2, the Saint Mary’s community will come together to celebrate Ash Wednesday, the day that opens the season of Lent. As our newspapers and airwaves fill with heartbreaking news of war in Ukraine, Pope Francis has invited everyone to make this Ash Wednesday “A Day of Fasting for Peace.”

“I encourage believers in a special way to dedicate themselves intensely to prayer and fasting on that day. May the Queen of Peace preserve the world from the madness of war,” the Pope said.

The Pope has also prepared a prayer that asks God to give us courage in this time of war: “Now, Lord, come to our aid! Grant us peace, teach us peace; guide our steps in the way of peace. Open our eyes and our hearts, and give us the courage to say: ‘Never again war!’; ‘With war everything is lost.’ Instill in our hearts the courage to take concrete steps to achieve peace.” Read the rest of Pope Francis’ Prayer for Peace here

On campus, the Mission & Ministry Center is providing three liturgies on Ash Wednesday. Please join us during Community Time, at 1 p.m., in the Chapel, for a reflective liturgy with the reception of ashes. At 5 p.m., a brief liturgy with the reception of ashes will be held outside on the Chapel Plaza for any who prefer to remain outdoors. At 8 p.m., the regular time of our Student Community Liturgy, we will hold a Mass with both the reception of ashes as well as of the eucharist in the Chapel.

Please join us in coming together in prayer and hope for a more united world.

Best regards,

Richard Plumb, PhD
