Biology Professor Weighs in on Whale Intelligence

Douglas Long, associate professor of biology at Saint Mary's College, was quoted in a report on KTVU's 5 p.m. newscast about research into the anatomy of whale brains that show their capacity for social communication, cooperation and empathy.

"It makes sense that they have the same types of structures in their brains that allow for these complex behaviors," said Long.

"This study has shown that they have the same neural networks that allow us to have these feelings so it's obvious that they do as well."
