Bishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorando to Speak at SMC

Schedule a Visit with SMC’s 2012 Montini Fellow

The Cummins Institute will honor Bishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorando, the chancellor of the Pontifical Academies of the Sciences and the Social Sciences, as its Montini Fellow of 2012 on Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Bishop Sánchez will speak at 7 p.m. on “Entelecheia: Education as the development into one's true self or in one's perfection (Aristotle, De Anima, II.5.417b).” At 3 p.m., presidents and leaders from local Catholic universities will gather with the bishop for a panel discussion on Catholic higher education; past academic vice-president William Hynes will be one of the panelists. Both events will be in the Soda Center’s Claeys Lounge.

Bishop Sánchez will also be available to meet with classes and individually with members of the community. Contact Sally Jamison, ext. 4406, to book a time.

Our 2012 Montini Fellow is the head of an academy, the Lincei, which numbered Galileo among its members. A portrait of Galileo rests on his desk. He is a lifelong academician and worked closely with Pope John Paul II on the papal encyclical, Fides et ratio (On Faith and Reason). Bringing him to the College is part of the special initiatives for the sesquicentennial around the theme of our Catholic tradition. For more information, contact Brother Charles Hilken.
