Saint Mary's was the only institution of higher education in the Bay Area named to the 2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction by the Corporation for National and Community Service. This is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. This is the fourth year in a row Saint Mary's College has earned the honor.


Michael McKeon, who has more than 30 years of experience in college admissions at public and private institutions, joined the College as the new dean of admissions in March. McKeon most recently was dean of admissions at Seattle University for 14 years. During his tenure there, McKeon was recognized for his use of holistic marketing and selection principles to target high–achieving students from diverse backgrounds.


Brother President Ronald Gallagher attended the annual meeting of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, met with Congressional staffers and the editor for the Chronicle of Higher Education. He hosted a gathering for Washington D.C.-area alumni during the trip to the nation's capital from Jan. 30 to Feb. 2. Nearly 40 Saint Mary's alumni and friends gathered in the Rayburn House office building to hear Brother Ronald give a State of the College report.


Brother Carlos Gabriel Gómez-Restrepo, president of the Universidad de La Salle in Bogotá, Colombia and a leading theorist on the relationship of higher education to politics, received an honorary doctoral degree in educational leadership as the guest of honor at Saint Mary's annual De La Salle Week Convocation in the Chapel on April 21.
