Brousseau Lecture: Electrical Engineering and the Development of Technology for Sound and Music
View a map and get directions.
This talk will present an Electrical Engineering specialty that deals with the design of technologies to process sound and music. Audio Digital Signal Processing ("Audio DSP"), a combination of math, acoustics, music, psychoacoustics and computer programming, is responsible for the creation of popular audio technologies such as MP3 compression, musical synthesizers, voice synthesizers, effects such as reverberation, equalization, delay or chorus, correction of out-of-tune vocals, recording, mixing and mastering, noise reduction, and many more. We will look at the nature of sound and introduce the fundamental concepts that audio DSP engineers use in their work. Some of the most popular technologies will be described in detail.
