BYU To Face Saint Mary’s In First of Two This Season

“BYU week is an important time for the team. BYU is a tough side and they deserve a lot of respect from us. It’s really imperative that everyone brings a lot of intensity and focus to practice in order to be as ready as possible.” - Nick Hryekewicz

MORAGA Calif. - In the first of two meetings this season, Saint Mary’s Rugby will host BYU this Saturday, February 16th at home. Year after year this multi-game matchup proves to be one of the most thrilling in D1A rugby. After defeating the Glendale U23 Side 73-7, the Gaels have moved into the number three spot sending Lindenwood down to number four in the week 19 D1A rankings. BYU, who has yet to play a match this season, remains 6th, sitting behind Army (5).

While SMC hopes to continue its impressively strong season and upward movement in the rankings, there is no way they are looking past the very strong BYU side traveling to Moraga. Along with some new faces in the coaching staff, the Cougars will be looking to make a statement at Saint  Mary’s stadium come 1pm this Saturday.

Last season SMC collected two wins against BYU. However, according to Nick Hryekewicz (Prop, Snr.), the success of last season will not affect the level of preparation for this weekends matchup. This week represents a true test for Gael Rugby. Hryekewicz explains that “BYU week is an important time for the team. BYU is a tough side and they deserve a lot of respect from us.” The senior, prop goes on to stress how it is “imperative that everyone brings a lot of intensity and focus to practice in order to be as ready as possible.”

Saint Mary’s Rugby fans can catch Hryekewicz and the rest of the Gael’s this Saturday at Saint Mary’s Stadium kicking off at 1pm. Looking forward, the Gaels will travel to Provo, Utah on March 9th to face BYU in their second and final regular season meeting.
