Campus Climate Survey: We Did It! Now it’s Time to Celebrate!

Join us for a thank-you celebration! Student Life is planning a community-wide thank you celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 10 from 12 to 2 p.m. on the Chapel Lawn complete with food trucks, a DJ, and giveaways. Mark your calendar! All campus community members are welcome to attend and enjoy a free lunch!

We did it! Together, we exceeded the 30 percent threshold needed for the 2021 Campus Climate Survey: Assessment for Our Learning, Living, and Working Community. A total of 1,343 students, faculty, and staff completed the survey. The breakdown is as follows:

• Undergraduate students rounded out with a 34.4 percent overall response rate.

• Tenure-track faculty in all categories had an overall response rate of 66 percent.

• Staff and all categories exceeded the 30 percent threshold with a total response rate of 58.2 percent.

Appreciations:

I want to acknowledge and thank members of the College Committee on Inclusive Excellence (CCIE); the Climate Climate Survey Co-Chairs and Working Group; and the entire Student Life team, including RAs, the Staff Council, Faculty Affairs, the Museum of Art, the Library, and the Mission and Ministry Center. I must also thank the amazing work of Margaux Kraemer (IC Assistant Director), Monica Marquez (DEI Graduate Fellow), Ashley Rose, Jackie Garcia, and Gerry Serrano (College Communications). A special thank you to Professor Monica Fitzgerald and her students in Introduction to Justice, Community, and Leadership; and Professor Scott Schonfeldt-Aultman and his students in Communication & Social Justice: Whiteness who tabled, created fliers, and posted on social media to get the word out. We could not have made our numbers without you!

Looking Forward: You Said It, We Did it!

Our next steps with the Campus Climate survey process will be exciting and generative. Rankin & Associates consultants Stephanie Danette Preston and Stefani Bjorklund will be conducting a comprehensive data analysis for the next few months. On April 25 and 26, 2022, they will visit campus to share the data from the survey in two to three forums that will be open to all students, staff, faculty, and Christian Brothers followed by a Q&A session. Campus leaders and managers will then process and assess the results, and will be provided support and resources to create a plan of action to address climate issues revealed in the survey. This will be an intentional process designed to address systemic issues here at Saint Mary’s College. Our actions will be grounded in supporting our mission as well as diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging best practices and will be properly resourced and assessed. President Plumb has made a commitment to address climate and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Saint Mary’s community, we will indeed listen and respond with care and action. “You Said It, We Did It!”

The Campus Climate Working Group and the College Committee on Inclusive Excellence will be providing updates throughout the year on our process and progress! To see an overview of the Campus Climate Survey Timeline and learn updates, visit our website.

Thank you, and Go Gaels!
