Meet the Staff


 Ashley Machado, Director of International Student Services & International Student Advisor

Ashley Machado is the Director of International Student Services and the International Student Advisor for the Center for International Programs.  As an advocate for international student success, Ashley joined Saint Mary's College in September 2017 with a Master’s in International Education Management from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies.  She has been teaching and advising international students since 2011 and has experience living, teaching, interning and volunteering abroad in places like Chile, Australia, Costa Rica and El Salvador.  A native of the Bay Area, Ashley is passionate about the environment and social justice.  She has traveled to over 15 countries and hopes to step foot on all seven continents.  Ashley taught herself how to knit and enjoys reading, running and yoga.

Vanessa Marquez, Director of Study Abroad

Vanessa Marquez is the Director of Abroad for the Center for International Programs at Saint Mary's College, and aides in Study Abroad, International Student affairs, and Jan Term Travel Courses. As an Alumna of SMC, she is no stranger to the Lasallian traditions embedded into the College's mission. Vanessa received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, and is a great proponent of social justice and intercultural dialogue. As an Undergraduate, Vanessa got her first taste of international education when studying abroad at Queen Mary University of London.  The thing she valued most about her time abroad was her proximity to a variety of cultures and new cuisines. She has visited over 11 countries and hopes to travel to a new country every year! In her spare time, Vanessa enjoys reading, writing, skateboarding, and taking long walks.

Nataly Berg, Study Abroad Coordinator

Nataly Berg is the Study Abroad and January Term Travel Coordinator for the Center of International Programs at Saint Mary's College of California.  

Nataly was born in Lima, Peru, and at 15, she moved to Nagoya, Japan, to be closer to family and begin her professional life. Nataly worked in the travel industry, primarily with Latin Americans, helping people navigate consular processes, travel and visa arrangement, and translation. She also became certified to teach ESL classes to children and adults.

After 15 years in Japan, Nataly moved to the U.S. to start a family, complete her education, and pursue her dreams. She graduated with a BA in Global Studies at Saint Mary´s College of California. Nataly is committed to supporting immigrant communities, teaching languages, and inspiring students to learn from diverse cultures.

Having lived in Asia, she traveled to South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and Australia. In South America, the Andes were her inspiration. She speaks Spanish, Portuguese, English and Japanese.

Nataly enjoys sewing, belly dancing, and reading. She lives in Concord, California with her husband and three pups
