Peter Chen Jr. has accepted the position of director of Employee Relations, Compensation and HR Consultation. His start date will be Monday, November 19.
Chen comes to Saint Mary’s from UC Berkeley, where he is senior human resources business partner in the Human Resources Center. Previously, he held senior-level HR roles with Wells Fargo Bank, the California State Automobile Association (CSAA), Safeway and Amtrak. His extensive background includes providing a broad range of HR consultation services in the area of employee and labor relations, investigations, compensation, recruitment, performance management, coaching, organizational design, workforce planning and process improvement.
He completed his MBA, with an emphasis on Employee Relations/General Business, and his BS in Business Administration in Human Resources/Labor Relations from American University in Washington, D.C.
Eduardo Salaz, assistant vice president for Human Resources, thanked the search committee, comprised of Richard Carp, Sandra Mattar, Adan Tejada and Michael Viola, for their time and commitment on this important search. He also thanked Jamila Buckner for her leadership and support in coordinating the recruitment, selection and interview process and the entire HR team for the time spent interviewing and assessing candidates.

Salaz said that in a few weeks, he will send out a campuswide communication announcing new additions to the HR team, highlighting some changes in the HR organization, sharing the HR organizational chart and communicating the changes to the department’s evolving HR roles and responsibilities.
