"His Eye is On the Sparrow"

SMC Glee, Chamber, and Jazz Singers in Virtual-Concert

Saturday, May 15, 8pm

Dr. Julie Ford, Director; Sharon Lee Kim, Assistant Director & Pianist

Phil Hawkins, Creative Media Director

Drawn from the beloved American hymn richly connected to the civil rights movement, our concert title also celebrates the power of hope and faith that shines through the work of our resilient and brilliant choral singers at SMC. Recorded outside, in person, in special tents and masks, and captured virtually with a combination of high-end recording equipment and smartphones, our virtual concert is artfully produced by new faculty member musician and technical artist, Phil Hawkins.

Saint Mary’s has been on a ten-year journey to cross-pollinate music from all vocal-choral genres. We’ve contextualized this year's study with particular focus on the African American Spiritual and Gospel genres. Our work culminates in performances of Moses Hogan’s Hear Our Prayer, and Rollo Dilworth’s I sing because I’m Happy, influenced and inspired by insights from our new voice professor, Jaron LeGrair. Our line-up includes works by additional significant BIPOC musical artists, including Happy by Pharrell Williams, and Fantasy by the legendary Earth, Wind and Fire, arranged by Greg Murai.

As Saint Mary’s College celebrates the 50-year anniversary of co-education, we highlight works by women composers and arrangers: Björk’s iconic and prophetic New World, Jennifer Barnes’ arrangements of jazz standards My Romance, and Give Me the Simple Life, and No Time by American Folksong expert, Susan Brumfield.

Our program features hauntingly beautiful classic choral repertoire such as Francis Poulenc’s Salve Regina, Z. Randall Stroope’s I carry your heart, and the Gregorian chant-based Ubi Caritas by Norwegian composer, Ola Gjeilo. As an homage to the pioneering virtual work on Zoom that we began last spring, we’ll re-share the delightful piece Rather Be by Clean Bandit/arr. by Pentatonix, featuring alumni from the class of 2020.

Come and share in the joy!
