College History

The history of Saint Mary’s College of California dates back to the 1850s and Bishop Alemany’s determination to foster institutions of Catholic learning on the West Coast. Unfortunately, many essential documents have been lost over the years, not least due to the several damaging fires sustained by the College.

Because of the close intertwining of the history of the College with that of the San Francisco District of the Christian Brothers, researchers may also want to consult the Archives of the District, as well as the College Archives, for documents pertaining to the history of Lasallian education on the West Coast.
