Congratulations to SOLA Alumnus Mahershala Ali ’96

Mahershala Ali ’96 & Sheila Hassell Hughes, Dean, School of Liberal Arts

It is with tremendous pride and delight that we offer our congratulations to SOLA alumnus Mahershala Ali ’96 for his recent Critics’ Choice Award and for his Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations for his performance in the role of Juan in the acclaimed independent film, Moonlight.

An accomplished actor known for memorable character roles in films and TV series, Mahershala most recently graced a stage at Saint Mary’s last May when he celebrated the graduating Class of 2016 as our undergraduate Commencement speaker.  During his remarks, he recalled his experiences as a Communications major with a growing interest in, and talent for acting.   He recounted his experiences with nurturing SOLA faculty mentors and showed appreciation for the “countless professors that threw [him] rafts” during his time at Saint Mary’s.

As he addressed students, parents, faculty and staff at Saint Mary’s that afternoon, Mahershala noted, “You have the capacity to leave a lasting impact and indelible impression upon this world…”  Indeed, the impression Mahershala is making in Hollywood and beyond is noteworthy.  We will be watching closely during the Golden Globes broadcast (January 8) and the SAG awards (January 29), sending our very best wishes for this Gael’s continued success and fulfillment.

Go Gaels!
