Rise
Featuring new works by dance faculty members including: CatherineMarie Davalos, Pope Flyne, Dana Lawton, Rogelio Lopez, Dima and Olga Sukachov, Elizebeth Randall Rains, and Shaunna Vella, as well as MFA in Dance Graduate Student, Zaquia Mahler Salinas.
Our show is titled Rise in recognition of these 20 years of artistic distinction and our communal vow to continue ascending to greatness. What does it mean to rise? Dancers study the sensations of rising, reaching, pressing up, opening our hearts, and trusting ourselves in expansion and lightness. Our movement research is interwoven with how we relate to the world, how people transition from moments of struggle to moments of rejoicing. This year it is important that we all work together to rise. We must rise from the political polarization that is dividing our country, we must rise together as a loving college community, and rise individually to become the people we want to be. The word “rise” conveys poetry in and of itself; it is the action we aspire to embody.
Our beautiful and diverse dance community ventured into this new year with powerful momentum. We will continue to work diligently to make dances that strive to rise with compassion, strength, intelligence, grace, and a strong commitment to our shared future. Emerge, elevate, celebrate, rise! Welcome.
