Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Allyship in the Environmental Movement: Justice through Healing - ONLINE

Date & Time:
Monday, April 20, 2020 - 5:30 p.m.

Join us for the Saint Mary's kick-off event of the 50th Anniversary of Earth Week - a workshop and guest presentation on diversity, equity, inclusion & allyship, with a focus on environmental justice. The environmental movement has made marked strides in reducing pollution and protecting natural resources. However, these environmental benefits have not been distributed evenly. Low-income, communities of color bear a disproportionate burden of environmental hazards (e.g., air and water pollution, proximity to toxic dump sites, etc.), while affluent, white communities are enriched by environmental benefits (e.g., access to green space, access to healthy food, etc.). There is increasing interest to engage with these issues and to join the environmental justice movement.  Join us as we engage in a facilitated conversation around the thorny and uncomfortable topics of allyship, diversity, equity and inclusion. We hope you will leave better able to contribute to a culture of inclusion at Saint Mary’s and beyond by articulating characteristics of productive allies and understanding basic techniques to support classmates or colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

This event is sponsored by the College Committee on Inclusive Excellence, The Intercultural Center, The Justice, Community & Leadership Program & Sustainability.
