Donor Spotlight: The Legacy of C. Joseph Crane '53
Joe Crane was named Alumnus of the Year this spring at the Alumni Awards Celebration after of a lifetime of leadership and generosity.
Throughout a successful 50-year career in the financial services industry, Joe Crane found time to serve Saint Mary's College, his community and the church in many meaningful ways. Former president of the SMC Board of Regents; president of Yosemite Club; director of Goodwill Industries, etc.; chair of the Better Business Bureau and more.
The C. Joseph Crane Endowed Scholarship was established in 1996. Joe Crane, at the request of Saint Mary's College employee John Laykem, decided to set up scholarships for students from Saint Mary's High School in Stockton who were accepted to Saint Mary's College. Over the years, more than 20 students have benefitted from these scholarships. Donors include alumni, corporations, foundations and Stockton business leaders and farmers. Joe Crane never stopped giving back to the College, and now, his wife Helen oversees the fundraising for the scholarship, which is over $500,000. The endowment is a lasting tribute to Joe's memory and generous spirit.
