Dr. Jill Biden To Deliver Keynote At 3rd Annual 'Better Together: California Teachers Summit' At Saint Mary’s

Dr. Jill Biden, keynote speaker for the 2017 Better Together: California Teachers Summit.Dr. Jill Biden, a lifelong educator and wife of former Vice President Joe Biden, will deliver the keynote address at the third annual Better Together: California Teachers Summit at Saint Mary’s College of California. Dr. Biden will address hundreds of educators at the College—the headquarters site for the statewide gathering—and thousands of teachers via live simulcast at more than 30 locations across the Golden State.

Better Together at Saint Mary’s will take place on Friday, July 28, 2017, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the College’s McKeon Pavilion, 1928 St. Mary's Road, Moraga, Calif., 94575.

“Over her three decades in education and during her time as Second Lady, Dr. Jill Biden has served as an inspiring role model for teachers across the country,” said Christopher Sindt, dean of Saint Mary’s Kalmanovitz School of Education. “Her social justice advocacy for access to higher education resonates profoundly with the KSOE mission to empower graduates to foster change for the common good. We are extremely proud and excited to welcome Dr. Biden to Saint Mary’s.”

During her 30-year teaching career, Dr. Biden has taught at community colleges, a public high school and a psychiatric hospital for adolescents. As Second Lady, she worked to highlight the importance of community colleges to America’s future while continuing to teach as a full-time English professor at a community college in Northern Virginia. With the February 2017 launch of the Biden Foundation, which advances opportunities for all people through educational programming and public policy analysis, Dr. Biden and her husband are continuing their commitment to higher education.

“Now More Than Ever,” the theme of the third annual summit, reflects an urgent call to action. The goal of the summit is to bring teachers together to exchange ideas on timely topics ranging from addressing bullying in the classroom, celebrating diversity and teaching students to be open-minded and critical thinkers. In addition to Dr. Biden’s keynote, the Summit will feature teacher-led workshops and TED style “Ed-Talks”, which highlight inventive teachers and proven educational strategies at work in classrooms across the state.

All teachers, teacher candidates, school administrators and other educators are invited to participate in the Summit, and registration is free. Attendees have the opportunity to earn a .5 continuing education unit credit for a minimal cost.

The Better Together: California Teachers Summit is a result of a unique partnership between the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU) and its member institutions, including Saint Mary’s, California State University (CSU) and the New Teacher Center (NTC).
