East Bay Times Reports Upcoming Community Outreach By CALC Director Ameer Thompson

East Bay Times logoSaint Mary's CALC Director Ameer Thompson was interviewed by the East Bay Times about his participation in the upcoming May 6, 2017 Los Medanos Community College concert “Black Gospel Music — An Urban Celebration of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts/Music & Math). Thompson spoke with the Times about the College's new School of Science student success initiative Caminos a Las Ciencias (CALC): Pathways to Science, a strategic initiative designed to enhance and expand the curriculum and resources for Hispanic and low-income students. CALC launched last year and includes a partnership with Los Medanos, which will help create a pipeline for students transferring fromthe community college to SMC. The Saint Mary's STEM director will serve as the keynote motivational speaker at the event. In keeping with the theme of the gathering, Thompson, who grew up in Oakland, earned his PhD from Cornell University​ ​and​ completed ​a post-doc​ ​in neuroscience at Columbia University,​ ​is also a musician. He plans to discuss ​the​intersection between music and science.
