Enrollment Booming at Private Colleges
Saint Mary's College Vice Provost for Enrollment Michael Beseda was quoted in an Oakland Tribune article that examined recent increases in the freshmen classes at private colleges, explained in part by public university woes and a larger student pool. (The story also ran in other newspapers including the Tri-Valley Herald, the San Mateo County Times and the Fremont Argus.)
"If somebody were to say to me, do you think you were influenced by the state and UC, I would say, yeah, intellectually, I think we were. We had to have been, but I just don't have the data to back that up," said Michael Beseda, vice provost for enrollment at St. Mary's College, where this year's freshman class of 611 was bested only by the incoming class of 2002, with 645 students.
