Excitement for Fall 2021: Saint Mary’s College of California Expects In-Person Instruction

As spring approaches and the days grow brighter, we are preparing to welcome students to campus for the fall 2021 semester in a safe and responsible manner. Our goal is to offer primarily in-person classes, welcome many more students to our residence halls, and resume most in-person services and activities, albeit with modifications.

Successful Track Record for Safety
Our confidence in serving our students is bolstered by our strong track record for safely teaching in-person and hosting students living on campus over the last six months. Our success is due to rigorous testing practices, excellent compliance with health protocols, offering classes in outdoor pavilions, and modifications to indoor classroom spaces, such as the installation of Plexiglass. We also implemented HyFlex classroom technology, which allowed faculty to teach simultaneously in-person to some students while others joined remotely. As a result of these strategies, there were no transmissions of COVID-19 on campus in fall 2020.

Looking Ahead to Fall 2021

In planning for the fall, we are encouraged by the increased pace of vaccine distribution and the rapidly improving health conditions in the Bay Area. We are preparing to offer a complete residential experience, including primarily in-person classes and an array of in-person services and social activities. Students will be able to take advantage of campus amenities such as the recreation center, swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, Saint Mary’s Chapel, library services, dining halls, and more.

Our top priority has been the health and safety of our community throughout our preparations. We will continue to take measures to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. Our small class sizes, beautiful outdoor spaces, and modified indoor classrooms all support a healthy environment. They also allow us the flexibility to adapt quickly to changing public health conditions while still providing in-person experiences.

We are committed to providing a personalized and transformative educational experience in the fall that is safe and abundant with in-person learning opportunities.
