Fire Impact on Campus and Resources

Dear Saint Mary's Students,

I have some additional information and resources for students who are being impacted by the air quality around campus and who may be looking for some personal support during this time.

As the wild fires in the local area continue to be fought and the weather impacts the direction of the smoke, we are seeing the air quality on campus decline. I shared yesterday that dust masks are available at the Facilities Services Parts Office in Madigan Gym. Additionally, for those students who have asthma or other upper respiratory issues, the Health and Wellness Center (HWC) does have N95 particulate masks available in a limited number at their front desk (Augustine Ground Floor facing Filippi Academic Hall). The HWC will be open after lunch at 1 p.m. and again open tomorrow beginning at 8:30 a.m. to Noon, 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. You can also give the office a call at 925-631-4254.

For those of you who are planning to assist your family in the areas impacted by fires, you are encouraged to perhaps consult with one of the staff at HWC to help you anticipate what you might need to avoid injury or exposure to extreme smoke conditions or to recognize symptoms of smoke inhalation (what to watch for). The nursing staff or clinicians would be glad to consult with you on this.

While you are on campus in both the residences or academic buildings, please keep the windows closed and do not prop doors open to buildings. Limit your outdoor activity at this time and immediately seek out the Health and Wellness Center if you begin to have breathing difficulties.

There have been a number of students who have asked if they can talk with someone about what is happening to their family and how frightening it is to be going through this.  The Office of Counseling and Psychological Services recognizes that this is a difficult time for many students who are from the area or who know others who have been impacted.

If you or someone you know has been impacted by the Napa/Sonoma fire, CAPS is offering a drop-in group today (Wednesday), Thursday and Friday from 4 -5. Come share your experience and get support from other students who understand what you're going through. No appointment needed, just drop by Augustine Ground Floor (facing Filippi Academic Hall).

Let us know if we can be of assistance,

Jane Camarillo
