Get Out the Vote: Don’t Miss Friday’s California Student Voting Summit

SMC History major and music minor Moises Gonzalez ’22 will provide the welcome to the online California Student Voting Engagement Summit on Friday, Sept. 18, noon to 5 p.m. The summit promotes civic learning and engagement across campuses in the state in an effort to increase student voter turnout. Student voting more than doubled from 2014 to 2018, according to the Institute for Democracy and Higher Education, and students have the potential to continue to impact elections in 2020.

Gonzalez, an intern with the Catholic Institute of Lasallian Social Action (CILSA), is excited to welcome students to the event. “2020 is clearly teaching us that there is much that we do not control. It is also highlighting what we can control—our daily actions individually and collectively. Voting is one of the main ways that we shape our communities. This event focuses on this critical election season and the value of student political engagement.”

Gonzalez and CILSA Director Jennifer M. Pigza, PhD, have served on the statewide planning team for this event, which is coordinated by the Students Learn Students Vote Coalition and funded by Facebook. Learn more about speakers and register here.
