Give Before You Go at Sustainable Move Out

There's one last chance to give before you go!

Students, gather up your belongings:  Saint Mary’s Sustainability is hosting their Sixth Annual Sustainable Move Out during the last week of school, from Tuesday, May 17 to Sunday, May 22.

Throughout move-out week, the Office of Sustainability, Environmental Health & Safety, the Housing Office, and Residential Experience will collect lightly used, functional items to donate to local nonprofits in the area and our own Free Store. In an effort to divert as much as possible from the landfill, the team also encourages students to recycle and compost while sorting through their move out items.

Sustainable Move Out involves a multi-week planning process from a dedicated team of sustainability student leaders. Weeks in advance, donation sites are identified, information and presentations are provided to residents, Resident Advisors and Resident Directors, flyers and social media content are designed and posted, logistics are sorted out with campus partners, including where and when to forklift large donation boxes to their carefully selected locations throughout campus.  When Move Out week finally hits, these students are ready and excited to roll up their sleeves and sort through the thousands of donated items, including clothes, books, school supplies, housewares, small electronics, room decorations, and storage containers.  Select items are saved for our Free Store, and the rest is transported to local donation centers including Veterans of America, Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul, the Contra Costa Food Bank and animal shelters.
