Go Gaels

By John Grennan

Two women’s basketball players received all-WCC honors: guard Jontelle Smith earned a spot on the WCC All-Conference Team and forward Louella Tomlinson was named to the All-Freshman Team. Tomlinson broke the NCAA women’s Division I record for blocks in a single season, totaling 156.

Six Saint Mary’s athletes were named to the fall 2007 WCC All-Academic team: Mario Mendoza and Karrie Hagedorn (cross country), Taylor Groess (volleyball), and Dave Blanchard, Corey Heldereth and Dylan Leslie (soccer).

The women’s soccer team signed five top high school student-athletes who will join the team in fall 2008. The newest Gaels are Lauren Crum (Los Altos), Daelyn Paul (Upland), Ashley Soro (San Diego), Sidney Garza (Ventura) and Alisa Vetterlein (Rheinfelden, Germany).

Women’s volleyball coach Rob Browning received a three-year contract extension in March. The Gaels return all their players from last season, including five WCC All-Freshman Team honorees.

Aspiring Gaels aged 8 to 18 are eligible for the Saint Mary’s Athletic Summer Camps. The 2008 camps include all-sport, baseball, basketball, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Call (925) 631-4386 for more info.
