Growth Through Uncharted Territory

Story by Brother Dominic Berardelli, FSC

At a recent forum attended by close to 75 parents of admitted Presidential Scholars participating in a campus overnight program, we asked how many were first-time college parents. Close to a quarter of them raised their hands. Many more "first-generation" families were scheduled to attend similar events. That we attract so many first-generation students and families is evidence of our commitment to living out the spiritual call that inspired our founder to create the first Lasallian schools several centuries ago.

We celebrate these young women and men who have stepped into uncharted territory and are breaking new ground for their families and future generations.

We also applaud the "first-generation college parents" of these students. Many have struggled to provide a stable environment and the basic necessities that enabled their children to grow spiritually, intellectually, and physically. They continue to support their children in many ways throughout their college experience, and their contributions mustn’t be overlooked.

I extend God’s special blessings upon all of you, our past, present, and future parents, and especially upon these "first-generation" parents! May Mary, our Patroness and Mother, hold you warmly in her loving embrace.
