Alumni Spotlight

We are thrilled to share some of the achievements of our outstanding alumni, who are making their marks in a wide range of fields. 

Medicine                    

Krstyal Karunungan (’17) completed her B.S. in Psychology at St Mary’s after which she worked as a Behavioral Therapist and a Clinical Research Coordinator at UCSF. She entered the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA MD program in the Fall of 2019.

At SMC, Nicole Nagayama (‘21) was the president of our American Cancer Society chapter and worked at the Student Disability Services Office. She conducted research in the Department of Radiology at UCSF, volunteered at the Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, and served as a crisis counselor for the Crisis Text Hotline before entering the UC Davis School of Medicine in 2021. 

Erika Strickler (‘16) graduated with a B.S. in Biology and served as a HIV prevention counselor, volunteered with AIDS hospice patients, and conducted clinical research in HIV prevention. She entered the UC Irvine School of Medicine in 2018. 

Nataly Sanchez (‘16) conducted summer research at St Mary’s and graduated with a B.S. in Biology. She volunteered in the Philippines through a Lasallian Service Internship and completed a premedical post-baccalaureate at the Washington University in Saint Louis. She worked as an ophthalmic assistant and served as a translator for Spanish-speaking patients before she started at the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in 2019. 

Megan Holt (‘20) participated in three research projects at St Mary’s and graduated with a B.S. in Biology after which she conducted a research internship with Astex Pharmaceuticals. She started the MD/PhD program at Renaissance School of Medicine at Stonybrook in 2022. 

Carlo Eikani  (‘16) conducted research at St Mary’s before graduating with a B.S. in Biology. He also conducted research at the Lawrence Berkeley National lab and at the UCSF School of Medicine before he entered the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in 2020. 

Karen Trang (‘15) graduated from St Mary’s with a B.S. in Biochemistry and attended Stanford School of Medicine in 2016. She completed her residency in surgery at UCSF. 

Ben Schepegerdes (‘20) was a residential advisor and chemistry tutor at SMC before graduating with a B.S. in Biochemistry. He gained extensive shadowing experience and worked as medical scribe before entering the Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine in 2021. 

Adaora Ezike (‘20) was a Lasalilan Peer Minister, Peer Health Exchange Health Educator and research assistant at St Mary’s before graduating with a B.S. in Biology. She went on to Saint Louis University College of Public Health for her MPH, worked as a doula and started at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stonybrook in 2022. 

Anisha Narayan conducted a premed post-bac at St Marys after which she completed a Masters program at USC where she received my M.S. in Neuroimaging & Informatics. She then completed medical school at Tulane University School of Medicine in May 2022, during which she completed a research year at UCSF in brain imaging on sensory processing disorder. She was  accepted into a residency program at the University of Illinois Chicago for a 5-year psychiatry research track, where she will be continuing brain research. 

Kathleen Lundeberg is a first-generation college student who graduated from SMC in 2016 with a B.S. in Biology, and went on to conduct Lymphoma research at the UC Davis Cancer Center, while also working as an ER scribe during her gap years. She matriculated into Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2018 with a scholarship funded by the Air Force (HPSP). She will graduate May 21, 2022 and start her Gynecologic Surgery & Obstetrics Residency in June, 2022 at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine in Dayton, OH. 

Nicholas Totah (‘19) is from Millbrae and graduated with his B.S. in Biochemistry at St Mary’s after which he worked as a research assistant at the Stanford University Department of Hematology. He entered the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine MD program in the Fall of 2020. 

Joey Fiske (’18) graduated from Saint Mary’s as a Biology major, and after recovering from shoulder surgery at the end of his athletic career, began shadowing at an orthopedic clinic in Santa Barbara. He then worked as a medical scribe in the emergency department before starting medical school at Touro University California in 2020. 

Giuseppe Carmassi ('15) graduated from St Mary's as a Biology Major, after having done a Lasallian Service Internship mission in Nepal his senior year. He earned his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine (class of 2020), and is now an Internal Medicine resident at HCA Florida Trinity Hospital-USF Morsani College of Medicine (class of 2023).

Rachel Garza (‘19) graduated from St Mary’s as a Biology major and spent two years as a medical and dental scribe for her gap years. She started medical school June 2021 at Western University of Health Sciences.

Megan Massoud (‘16) graduated with a B.S. in Health Science and went on to complete her medical degree at CA Northstate University. 

Nico Arts (‘16) graduated from Saint Mary’s with a B.S. in Biology and went on to attend Eastern Virginia Medical School 

Eric Dovichi (‘92) and graduated with his BS in Biology at St Mary’s after which he completed his MD at the University of Southern California. He conducted his Radiology Internship at Stanford Hospital and went on to co-found ChatBunker LLC, an internet based HIPAA compliant application optimizing physician communication and collaboration. 

Kristina Pravoverov (‘18) graduated with a B.S. in Biology and started the MD/PhD program at University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 2018.

Zach West (‘16) graduated with a B.S. in Biology and went on to the Emory School of Medicine MD Program. 

 Brian Shaw (‘13) majored in Biology at St Mary’s and went on to attend the UCSF School of Medicine.

Madeline Bell (‘16) graduated from St Mary’s with a B.S. in Psychology and attended the University of Illinois College of Medicine.

 

Pharmacy

Lynn Hilario Deguzman (’97) completed her B.S. in Biology/Chemistry and her Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco in 2003. She is currently the Regional Clinical Operations Manager at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland.

Ryan Henry (‘19) completed his B.S. in Health Science and is currently getting a PharmD at Touro University.  

Franchesca Soe (‘17) completed her B.S. in Health Science and is currently attending University of Texas, Austin for her PharmD.

 

Veterinary Medicine            

Adriana Albini (’18) completed her B.S. in Biology at St Mary’s and was accepted to the Western university of Health Sciences Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program in 2019.

 

Optometry

Angelica Estrella (’14) completed her B.S. in Biochemistry at her Doctor of Optometry at the University of California, Berkeley in 2020. She is currently an Optometrist at Kopolow & Girisgen in Reno, NV.  

 

Fabiola Zaragoza (‘19) completed her B.S. in Health Science and is currently conducting her Doctor of Optometry degree at University of California, Berkeley. 

 

Research                   

Amanda Wong (’19) completed her B.S. in Biochemistry at St Mary’s and her Master’s in Chemical, Physical, and Structural Biology at Baylor College of Medicine. She is currently a Junior Product Manager at BioIntelliSense, Inc.

 

Jada Walker (’18) graduated with a B.S. in Health Science and worked in an optometry office as an optometric technician/scribe which led her me pursue a PhD in chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin.

Jonathan Reyes (’07) completed his B.A. in Kinesiology, his MD at Our Lady of Fatima university in 2012, and went on to complete a BS in Computer Science at Oregon State University. He is currently a Clinical Research Coordinator at Stanford University School of Medicine. 

 

Biotech/Pharmaceuticals

Slesha Thapa (’15) completed her B.S. in Biology and completed her Master of Science in the Biological Sciences at Dominican University of California in 2021. She is currently a Research Consultant at BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc.
