Healthcare at Catholic Colleges in the Spotlight

Last week, both Loyola Marymount University and Santa Clara University announced that they would drop coverage for “elective” abortion due to a change in interpretation of the state law by their insurance provider, Anthem Blue Cross.

Unsurprisingly, Saint Mary’s has fielded a number of inquiries about this issue. In light of these developments, the College is reviewing the essential benefits requirement under California law and the options offered by our health care providers, United Healthcare and Kaiser Permanente, in consultation with faculty, staff and administrators who serve on the Employee Benefits Advisory Committee.

The College will continue to assess and develop our policies in light of our commitment to our Catholic mission.
