Transfer Students
Being responsive to transfer student needs for upper-division classes we also took the necessary steps to transform one of our lower-division requirements, Historical Methods, (formerly HIST 10) into an upper-division class (HIST 101). We also have put incoming transfer students in touch with current transfer students so that they could get peer advice and insight from others who directly understand the needs of transferring to Saint Mary’s College. We also have created two new Community Engagement (CE) courses (HIST 181: Public History and HIST 182: History Mentors) to help students achieve this important graduation requirement with upper-division credit within the major.
Tips to thrive and prosper as a transfer student to Saint Mary’s College History Department:
The more lower-division classes you can complete before you transfer the faster you can complete the major. We require a total of 4 lower-division courses.
The more Core Curriculum requirements that you can fulfill before arriving at Saint Mary’s College the easier it is to focus on your time on your other requirements.

Assumes >16.0 credits at entry (Junior status):
Ideally, students will complete the following courses before coming to SMC:
--English Composition I & II (second must include a research paper and be UC transferable)
--Foreign Language to Level 3 proficiency
--Math (Math dept taught: finite math, statistics, or calculus and above)
--Science + Lab (course must have independent lab component attached to it)
--Two Artistic Analysis courses (Literature, Media, Art/Art History, or Performing Arts)
Students transferring in as Juniors will only have 2-3 course slots available to make up these Core Curriculum requirements in a 2 year graduation plan.
NOTES:
UD: upper-division courses, numbered 100+. 16 upper-division courses are required, so only two lower-division requirements can be “made up’ if not taken prior to transfer. (Math, Science, Language, Composition are nearly always lower-division courses.)
Core Curriculum requirements to be fulfilled at Saint Mary’s College:
Collegiate Seminar 102, 103 (+104 if entering <16 cr./64 Carnegie Units)
Theological Understanding: TRS 189 + UD elective
*Community Engagement: may be part completed with Theological Exploration, Pathways, History elective, or elective.
Engaging the World: American Diversity, The Common Good, and Global Perspective are generally satisfied within the History major.
