National Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, and is the College’s first formal, monthlong Latinx heritage celebration. Check out the impressive schedule.
In the spirit of inclusive excellence, in 2018, Saint Mary’s launched the College's inaugural "44 Days Honoring Black History" series. A nod to President Barack Obama, the nation's 44th commander in chief, and first African American president, the 44 Days initiative—which runs from the MLK Holiday throughout February—highlights the rich contributions of Black culture to the nation, the world, and the SMC campus.
Two local elected officials visited Saint Mary's College and took turns hailing the merits of bipartisanship. “Every major challenge... is best solved when both parties sit down and work together on a solution,” said Baker. “I’m going to represent the people of my district and not my political party,” said Glazer.
Last spring, students, factulty, and staff were encouraged to come learn more about what Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is and to hear directly from students on our campus who identify as students with ASD. Psychologist Dr. Alex Lazo was a guest speaker and shared information with the attendees about what some of the general characteristics are and how students with ASD on our campus learn and process information.
A Disability and Employment event took place in the SMC InterCultral Center last spring and was open to all students on campus. The purpose of the event was to bring together individuals who could give information and advice to college students about the current job landscape for individuals with disabilities and to offer some tips and information to support students with their job or internship search.
Every year, Saint Mary’s College welcomes a student body that honors the diversity of our nation. Last year several donors contributed to the Moonlight Scholarship inspired by actor and alumnus Mahershala Ali ’96 (pictured, center, with HP students on campus) who benefited from the HP program as a student 20 years ago.
