10 a.m. | Danza Azteca Xiuhtecuhtli Opening Prayer & Workshop (50 min)
Join us for a workshop around Indigenous dancing and learning about the meaning behind the dress and dance with Sacramento-based ceremonial dance circle Danza Azteca Xiuhtecuhtli. Xiuhtecuhtli is the gaurdian energy of fire, day, and heat. As the caretaker of the fire that sits in the center of the four directions, Xiuhtecuhtli represents the blessings of warmth in the cold and light in the darkness. Danza Azteca Xiuhtecuhtli, likewise, focuses on preserving indigenous traditions for future generations by being a warm and guiding light for families.
11 a.m. | Watsonville Campesino Appreciation Caravan (WCAC) (50 min)
Valentina Velasquez ‘20 graduated from SMC with a B.A. in Ethnic Studies and Spanish. She will provide a presentation on the WCAC movement consisting of organizing support of migrant farmworkers during the pandemic. Q&A will follow the presentation.
12 p.m. | Tovah Cook & Dr. Julia Hernandez, Black Binder (50min)
This workshop will focus on how to build Black & Brown power through accomplice work, and will share tools from their book on how to take action and dismantle oppressive systems.
1 p.m. | Poetry Performance by Ariana Brown with Q&A led by Dr. Raina León (50 min)
Ariana Brown is a Black Mexican American poet, performer, and workshop facilitator who tours college campuses, poetry slams, and local organizations to speak about queer Black feminism, queer Black futures, affirmation, care, and (sometimes) critiques of Latinidad. Saint Mary's very own Faculty member, Dr. Raina Leon, will provide lead a Q&A discussion following the performance.
2 p.m. | Healing Circle with Flor Y Machete (30 min)
Myrna is a queer, Boricua herbalist, educator, and cultural organizer. Healing justice circles are spaces where we honor ancestors, connect with plant abuelitxs, share wisdom, create medicine, sing, breathe, and remember ways we have fought against the violence of racism, colonialism, white supremacy, patriarchy, displacement and imposed poverty. A reflective, connected, joyful opportunity to heal in resistance together.
2:30 p.m. | Student Mixer at the End with DJ Moreno (30 min)
* DJ performances and suprise guests will be featured during the breaks.
