Apply here for Br. Camillus Chavez ILaLS Student Award!

The Institute for Latino and Latin American Studies (ILaLS) is pleased to announce that we are taking applications for the Brother Camillus ILaLS Student Award! This award honors Br. Camillus, whose work, presence, and energy are indelibly woven into the fabric of the college. For over 45 years as a Christian Brother here at SMC he has helped make all of our days better and better.

This year, we want to honor the life of Josefina Martínez, a Mexican immigrant from Jalisco, Mexico,
who instilled the value of education in her children, despite the fact that she only had a sixth-grade
education herself. She visited Saint Mary's many times and would have loved to have the
opportunity to study among us.

This year’s awards are made possible by small contributions made by family and friends who
donated to honor her legacy. In this spirit, this year’s awards will recognize social justice and
equity work by students.

In order to be considered for this year’s award, we ask that undergraduate students provide a
250-word (1 page) response to the following:

Describe the ways in which you have contributed to making SMC more equitable.
Tell us about a research project, a service experience, or an organizing opportunity that demonstrates
a deep commitment to social justice and equity, particularly in Latinx communities.

Use this form to submit your response by December 15, 2021, at 5 pm. Students who are selected
will receive a monetary award (up to 1000 dollars), a certificate, and are asked to participate in
an awards ceremony in the Spring semester (more details to follow).
