5th Year TFT Frequently Asked Questions 

How do I know that my application was received?

After you submit your online application, we will review your file and email your application checklist to you (allow one week).You will receive a copy of your application checklist whenever we receive new materials for your file, so that you will know where you are in the process. If an item is marked with an “X” then we have received the documents we need in that category.

 

What can I expect in the admission interview?

After you submit your application, a member of the MSTE faculty will contact you to schedule your interview. This is an opportunity for us to learn more about you and also for you to ask any questions you may have. Come prepared to talk about your goals, and related  experience/volunteer work. we will review your Program of Study and program requirements.

 

How do I meet the Basic Skills Requirement (i.e. CBEST) for acceptance to the 5th Year?

You may satisfy the Basic Skills Requirement by one of the following methods:

1.Pass or Register (with a test date) for the CBEST

2.Pass or Register (with a test date) for the CSET IV Writing Skills Examination

3.Achieve qualifying score on the:

a. SAT math score 550 or higher and critical reading score 500 or higher

b.ACT math score 23 or higher and English score 22 or higher

4.Achieve score of 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Exam:

a.math (Calculus AB or Calculus BC or Statistics)

b.English (English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition)

 

How do I meet the Subject Matter Requirement (CSETs Multiple Subjects I, II, III) for acceptance to the 5th Year?

Pass or provide proof of registration (with test date) for at least one subtest of  CSET Multiple Subjects I, II, III.

 

When do I need to meet the Basic Skills Requirement (i.e. CBEST, SAT, ACT, CSET IV)?

You must satisfy one of the Basic Skills Requirement options before you can register for daily student teaching (MSTE 320 Supervised Teaching II). TFT students starting in Summer take MSTE 320 the following Spring; we must receive documentation of your passing status at least 2 weeks before Spring term starts in February. If you are registering for the CBEST , consider that  results take 5 weeks and the waiting period for test retakes is 45 days from your test date.

 

When do I need to meet the Subject Matter Competence Requirement (CSETs Multiple Subjects I, II, III)?

You must pass the CSETs Multiple Subject I, II and III before you can register for daily student teaching (MSTE 320 Supervised Teaching II). TFT students starting in Summer take MSTE 320 the following Spring; we must receive documentation of your passing status at least 2 weeks before Spring term starts in February. When registering for a test date, consider that  results take 5 weeks and the waiting period for test retakes is 45 days from your test date.

 

I’ve already been through the LiveScan fingerprinting process, do I need to do the LiveScan again for the Certificate of Clearance?

The CTC requires your LiveScan results to be sent directly to them. So even if you already went through the LiveScan process for another district or agency, you must  go through the process again. Refer to the Application Checklist for instructions and the LiveScan Form 41-LS.

 

When will I receive an admissions letter?

When your application checklist is complete, your application will be submitted to the Admissions Committee. You will be notified of your official acceptance status via email and U.S. mail within 2 weeks. You will also receive instructions how to accept our Offer of Admission and return the Tuition Deposit (applied toward tuition). When we receive your Signed Offer and Deposit, we will register you in your Summer courses (you will self-register in future terms).

 

What will be my Summer Term Schedule?

  • Initial Intensive (1 day TBD) Attendance is mandatory.
  • MSTE 317 meets twice a week (8 meetings)
  • MSTE 275 meets once a week (3 meetings)
  • MATS 501 meets MWF for 2 weeks (8 meetings)

The schedule will be released in March. In the meantime, plan for your courses to meet from mid-June to end of July. Your credential (MSTE) courses meet from mid-June to mid-July, and your master course (MATS 501) meets the last 2 weeks of July. Fall Term begins the last week of August.

When can I register for my courses for the Summer Term?

After you complete your application, you will receive official notification of your acceptance. You will receive instructions on how to accept our Offer of Admission and return the Tuition Deposit (applied towards tuition). When we receive your Signed Offer and Deposit, we will register you in your Summer courses (you will self-register via GaelXpress in future terms).

 

Who will tell me what to take? What are my courses in the 5th year?

During your admission interview, we review your courses with you and develop a Program of Study (PoS) which shows the courses/units you will take each term. If you need to change  your PoS, it must be first approved by your advisor.

What can I expect in my Supervised Teaching placement?

To support you while you are in your field experiences, we provide both a College Supervisor and a Master Teacher at the school site. You will experience all phases of the K-12 school year (including first and last day of school) and two grade levels (K-2 and/or 3-5 and/or 6-8 CORE). Your first placement (MSTE 310) will be 2 ½ days/week for 18 weeks and your second placement (MSTE 320) will be 4 days/week for 14 weeks. The second placement includes a low-performing or hard-to-staff public school as well as significant experience with English Learners.

 

How many semester units comprise the 5th year of the program?

There are 24 units in the credential program. The Master of Arts in Education is an additional 11 units. The total units for the credential and Master of Arts in Education program is 35 units. For the breakdown of units by term, refer to Program of Study.

 

How much does each semester unit cost?

Current tuition per semester unit is $995/unit; tuition information can be found on our website under Admissions and Aid at http://www.stmarys-ca.edu/kalmanovitz-school-of-education/prospective-applicants/tuition-fees. Summer term is the beginning of a new academic year and you can expect a 4% tuition increase each academic year.

 

Is financial aid available? Are scholarships available?

When you apply to the program, you may also start the process to apply for financial aid. The financial aid application/instructions are on the Saint Mary's website, click here. When will I get my new SMC student ID card?

Your picture will be taken at the Initial Intensive. Your ID number will be the same as your undergraduate ID. Cards will be distributed the following week in class.

 

Can I receive health insurance through the College?

Graduate students are not eligible for enrollment in school-sponsored insurance.
