Lasallian Educator Honored in Convocation During De La Salle Week
Brother Carlos Gabriel GÃ³mez-Restrepo, president of the Universidad de La Salle in BogotÃ¡, Colombia, received an honorary doctoral degree as the guest of honor at Saint Mary's College at the annual Convocation on April 26 in the College Chapel.
Brother Carlos told the audience of faculty, students, staff and visitors that he was touched by the honor.
"I would like to assure you from the bottom of my heart that I am proudly Lasallian, that I am proudly Colombian and that, from this day on, I am proudly an alumnus of Saint Mary's College of California," he said, with the audience rising in a standing ovation in response.
Brother Carlos is a leading theorist on the relationship of higher education to politics. His innovative management style as executive vice president of Universidad de La Salle led to his appointment as the institution's president. Under his administrative leadership Universidad de La Salle received the certification of High Quality from the Ministry of National Education in August 2008.
GÃ³mez-Restrepo has also served as executive secretary of the Lasallian Latin American Region, general coordinator of the 44th General chapter and vice president of the International Association of Lasallian Universities.
