LEAP Program Helps Dancers Move to Next Stage
The Liberal Education for Arts Professionals (Leap) Program at Saint Mary's College was mentioned in a Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine article about how professional ballet dancers prepare for new careers. It is now common for dancers to enroll in college courses and seek career counseling while they are still performing, the story noted.
The article said, in part:
Because of the all-consuming culture of dance, retired performers often feel as if they have nothing to offer the business world, says Claire Sheridan, founder of the LEAP program at Saint Mary's College of California.
"But they have all sorts of skills that can transfer," she says. "Work ethic, motivation, discipline, ability to think under pressure. These people know the meaning of excellence, and they've known it since the age of 5."
