Graduate Students

Faculty/Christian Brothers
- The loan period for most books is 1 semester.
- The loan period for audio/visual materials is 14 days.
- There are 3 renewals for most items.
- 160 items may be borrowed at one time.

Faculty library privileges at other academic institutions
Graduate Theological Union (GTU)
To check it out as a GTU patron, one would have to purchase a Community Card (3 mos. for $40; 6 mos. for $80; one year for $145).
- No Fee
- Full Time employee's ONLY
- Required: (1) SMC ID w/valid dates for the current academic year and (2) written letter on SMC department letterhead/stationary verifying the SMC faculty full time status
- Entitles you to check out materials/books and access the data base while on-site at Doe
- No remote access will be granted when off site
- No electronic books permitted
*P/T employees that are CA residents may apply for a library card in order to gain access to the Doe Library
Affiliated Scholar
- Borrowing privileges through interlibrary loan.
- Electronic resources are available on-site.
- Research consultation is available by drop-in or appointment.
Staff

- There are 3 renewals for most items.
- 50 items may be borrowed at one time.
- Fees and fines are paid at the library.
Alumni
- Alumni may purchase a library card for a $10 annual fee.
- The loan period for most books is 28 days.
- 10 items may be borrowed at one time.
- Audio/visual materials can be used on-site.
- There is 1 renewal for most items.
- Alumni have access upon request to the Vault Career Intelligence, the Sage databases, and the Project MUSE databases. All other electronic resources are available on-site. Electronic resources available through the Saint Mary's College Library are licensed by the college for non-commercial use by SMC faculty, staff, students, and on-site users, for educational or research purposes only.
- Fees and fines are paid at the library.
Community Borrowers
- Community borrowers may purchase a library card for a $75 annual fee.
- Residents of Contra Costa, Solano, and Alameda counties may apply for a library card.
- The loan period for most books is 28 days.
- 5 items may be borrowed at one time.
- Audio/visual materials can be used on-site.
- There is 1 renewal for most items.
- Community borrowers have access to electronic resources on-site.
- Fees and fines are paid at the library.
Families of College Employees
- Spouses, partners, and children (ages 16 and up) of current Saint Mary's employees may register to receive a library card.
- The loan period for most books is 28 days.
- 30 items may be borrowed at one time.
- There are 2 renewals for most items.
- Family members have access to electronic resources on-site.
Emeritus/Emerita Faculty

Privileges for a Professor Emeritus/Emerita:
Eligible for limited Library borrowing privileges through Interlibrary Loan, and will have remote access to Library databases and electronic books.
Procedure for promotion to Professor Emeritus/Emerita:
- The candidate will be proposed in writing for Emeritus/Emerita status by the candidate's department or by a senior faculty member to the Dean of the School.
- The Dean of the School will solicit letters of support from colleagues and the candidate's department.
- The collected letters will be submitted to the Dean, who will forward them with his/her recommendation to the Rank and Tenure Committee.
- Recommendation from the Rank and Tenure Committee will be forwarded by the chair to the Provost for his/her approval.
- The letter will then be submitted to the Academic Resources Dean for borrowing privileges.
