MBA Faculty Win Best Paper Award at the Global Business & Social Science Research Conference
In late June, three Graduate Business professors from Saint Mary's College were honored with the prestigious Best Paper Award at the Global Business and Social Science Research Conference inBeijing, China. Visiting Professor Willington Onuh, Finance Professor Tina Xiaotian Zhang and Operations Professor Yung-Jae Lee collaborated on the award-winning research paper titled "Domestic and Offshore Outsourcing, and Labor Productivity: Evidence from Firms Located in the Philippine Economic Zone in Cavite, Philippines."
Whereas most of the research to date on the topic of outsourcing focuses on large firms from developed countries, Onuh, Zhang and Lee's study examines the impact that offshore and domestic outsourcing have on labor productivity in emerging markets and small firms. The results are intriguing. Centering their focus on the Philippine Economic Zone in Cavite, Philippines, Onuh, Zhang and Lee determine that offshore outsourcing has a positive and significant impact on labor productivity for small Philippine firms in this area. What's more, Filipino-owned firms deter productivity when they engage in domestic outsourcing, mirroring the results of foreign-owned firms engaging in domestic outsourcing.
Onuh, Zhang and Lee's findings can be applied even further and should serve to inform local policy makers whose preference for domestic outsourcing as a strategy for local economic development is, in actuality, impeding labor productivity in emerging regions like Cavite.
Onuh, Zhang and Lee's research is one of many faculty collaborations at the Saint Mary's College of California School of Economics and Business Administration.
