"My advice is that you CAN do it. You might struggle here and there, but there is nothing in life that should stop you from doing what you want, when you want to do it."
My name is Leah Brown. I had a very unique experience getting my MBA while pregnant, during a global pandemic and an economic downturn. Read my story below.
I chose Saint Mary’s College after seeing the advertising billboards on Bart during my daily commute. I loved that the school is local, has small class sizes, and is well-known for the accredited MBA program. I felt as though it was the right environment for me to pursue my MBA, which I’ve been wanting to do since the completion of Undergrad.
The most valuable thing I’ve learned is that it's not really about what you learn, but rather how you apply this knowledge and the use of reasoning skills. If you can prove your point with facts, no one can ever tell you that you are wrong.
The biggest challenges I faced were becoming a mom, dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a cross country move, right in the middle of my program! Before the arrival of my son, my husband and I moved closer to my family in San Jose. I was commuting an hour+ each way for class, often sitting in traffic for extended periods of time. Then the pandemic hit and as a result of the economic downturn, I was laid off from work. When courses went online, we made the decision to move to Florida to be closer to my husband’s side of the family. So, it was very stressful for my family. I overcame all these obstacles by just focusing on my end goal. I was so close to finishing the program when all of this was happening, so my mind just stayed focused on my degree.
I learned that I am more determined than I believed I was. I always knew I wanted to complete my MBA (or some grad school program), but I didn’t realize how determined I was to strive for perfection in my school. I learned that when I apply myself 100%, I really can accomplish all the things I set out for myself.
Focus on the “why,” and remember that every obstacle or challenge you overcome just makes you stronger. Nothing comes easy, but when you achieve your goals, the trying times will make you feel even more accomplished. I would also advise just diving into the application process and do what you know you want to do (get an MBA). It is COMPLETELY worth it in the end. The networking with professors and other students is something that is irreplaceable.
I had many people support me in finishing my program, but the biggest support system was my husband and my parents. When I had to leave early to travel to school and spend hours away from my new baby, I felt comfort knowing I had my husband and parents to watch him. There were people I trusted who encouraged me to stay focused on finishing the program, in the time frame I wanted. I also highly utilized Catherine, Erinn and Marco. They were extremely understanding of my situation, and they made sure I was able to finish the program while simultaneously maneuvering through my life as a new mom. I also utilized the student disabilities services (SDS), who communicated with my professors to ensure I had all the support I needed with time off and providing the material online after I gave birth.
One experience at SMC that stands out to me was how SEBA adapted to Covid-19. Everyone had to transition to online learning and teaching, which was a challenge. However, the faculty and staff constantly asked for feedback from the students, which shows how much care they have for the safety and well-being of their students. Just like in business, pivoting is always necessary. The staff at SMC put this into action, and my classmates and I were able to maneuver through this crazy time that is definitely going to go into the history books.
Carly discovered how connected the Saint Mary's community is when she became a double alum, secured a job from her internship, and ultimately landed her dream job.
Keith learned firsthand the benefits and flexibility of the Professional MBA program. He was able to complete his degree while juggling a busy work schedule and young family.
