One Donor at a Time

Lisa Moore, Vice President for AdvancemementSigns of a changing culture of philanthropic investment in the College are all around. Saint Mary’s received more than $13.7 million in cash and new pledges in the 2016-17 academic year, which reflects an 85 percent increase over the 2015-16 year. This growth in giving was made possible thanks to the generous and loyal support of alumni, parents, and friends of the College.

Of special note was the significant increase in million dollar gifts received by the College. Over the year, four donors committed gifts of $1 million or more to key campaign priorities. These included support for endowed scholarships, the Library & Learning Commons, and the McKeon Pavilion/Student Athlete Performance Center. These principal gifts were made due to donors’ belief in the College’s future and its commitment to the success of our students and community.

Over the course of the past year many philanthropic goals were not only achieved, but exceeded. For example, the Head + Heart + Hands Endowment challenge, a giving initiative in support of CILSA and championed by SMC parent donors, was fully funded to create an endowed fund of more than $750,000. The Mulvaney Family was inspired by their daughter Meg’s experience at Saint Mary’s while on a Jan Term trip to Rwanda. They challenged the College to match their initial gift of $250,000 and offered to make an additional contribution once this target was met. We exceeded the goal a year ahead of the proposed deadline and now this endowed fund is generating resources for the community engagement efforts of CILSA.

Our Board of Trustees, Regents, Alumni Board, and School-based advisory boards advocated for philanthropic support and engagement, which strengthened their partnership in the work of advancing Saint Mary’s. These groups introduced our staff to members of their own personal networks while also increasing their personal giving to the College.

Saint Mary’s College has had the good fortune of receiving estate gifts over the years that have allowed us to build structures like Filippi Administrative Hall, grow endowed scholarships and programs, and establish endowed chairs. Planned gifts—future bequest intentions made while donors are living—are an essential component of a strong culture of philanthropy. Understanding the impact of creating a robust pipeline for future gifts, our team launched an initiative in FY17 to increase the number of new planned gifts each year. Our efforts resulted in an increase from an average of 15 per year to 45 this past year. This work will be critical in securing the financial health of the College while also ensuring a steady stream of gifts in the coming years.

The 1Day1SMC tradition continues! Our third year of this 24-hour giving challenge was the best yet. We raised more than $340,000 and secured 1,950 donors for the College! This effort would not be successful without the participation of many of our campus partners and every student, alumnus, faculty, staff, parent, Christian Brother, foundation, corporation, and friend. Thank you!

In addition to the philanthropic work of our team, our engagement efforts continue to inspire connection and build loyalty amongst our alumni, parents, and friends. In 2016-17 we hosted more than 4,200 alumni at more than 60 alumni-sponsored activities. We also partnered on 19 volunteer-led regional events touching alumni and parents across the country.

I invite you to join us by investing in the future of Saint Mary’s College. A promising future can and will happen when all of us come together to support the College with our involvement and our gifts of all sizes.

We are here to assist you in meeting your philanthropic and engagement goals, so please reach out! We look forward to working with you.

In the spirit of Saint Mary’s,

Lisa M. Moore ’96
