Message From the President Honoring Veterans Day

Please join me in honoring our student, staff, and faculty veterans this Veterans Day, November 11. We owe our brothers and sisters deep gratitude and respect for their service to our country. In addition to bringing a crucial depth of experiences to our classrooms and campus life, these community members exemplify the Lasallian ethic of service to others.

Please consider expressing your gratitude to our veterans by submitting a Note of Gratitude at this website or in person on Wednesday, November 10, in front of the Chapel.

Saint Mary’s has also scheduled the following events for Thursday, November 11:

  • A special bell ringing will honor our veterans and the signing of the Armistice at 11 a.m. at the Bell Tower.
  • At 2:30 p.m., please join us in the Veterans Memorial Grove for a special prayer service of gratitude. It will begin with an opening prayer; MFA student Jenyth Gearhart-Utchen will read a poem written by a WWI vet, and student veteran Brad Gibson will share an additional reading.
  • From 3 to 5 p.m., faculty, staff, and student veterans are invited to our Veterans & Veterans Dependents happy hour in the Faculty Staff Dining Room, across from the Psychology Building.
  • And all week, the Vets Workout Challenge will take place at the Rec Center, where veterans will post workouts for others to try. Click here for more information.

I encourage everyone in our community to read the series of articles put together by College Communications that will run on MySMC this month. These stories highlight our student veterans and provide a chance to learn about their experiences and community. This includes their creation of the Veterans Resource Center in Filippi Academic Hall, room 124. Here, veteran and veteran-dependent students—and, importantly, friends and allies—meet to explore their similarities, share experiences, and maneuver through College life. We will continue to support them in this endeavor.

To support our veteran students, the reestablished SMC Veterans Committee will meet monthly to optimize Saint Mary’s resources to meet their needs. With the assistance and guidance of the VA, veteran work-study student employee Nicole Foran was hired on October 14, 2021. She is currently being trained and will shortly be providing information and additional resources to all veteran students.

Please join me in extending our deepest gratitude and appreciation to our veterans, both on and off campus.

Best regards,

Richard Plumb, PhD
President
