Fair Trade Fridays

Saint Mary's is a FAIR TRADE COLLEGE! We are committed to sourcing coffee, tea, chocolate and other products from growers that ensure fair wages, safe working conditions and that use sustainable practices. Fair Trade directly connects with the fidelity of our educational mission, Catholic principles and Lasallian identity. Saint Mary's has been a delegated Fair Trade College since 2014. We are the first college in Northern California to achieve this delegation. Read the article posted by SMC about this honor here.

Upcoming Events:

Shopping for the holidays? Consider supporting our FUNDRAISER for Lasallian Women of Hope, an international Lasallian project in its 6th year of fostering educational access, empowering women and girls, and creating sustainable change.

Our goal is to raise $500, which will go directly toward these current LWH projects: funding a clean water system at a girl’s school in Kenya and expanding the Menstrual Education Program in India. 25% of proceeds from your purchases will go toward these projects.

For further Fair Trade shopping, we encourage you to support the following vendors that we have highlighted at past Fair Trade Fridays:

The Dark Side of Chocolate - Film Screening & Dinner

Thursday, November 7, 5:30-7pm

Join us to watch The Dark Side of Chocolate, a documentary about the exploitation and slave trading of African children, many from Mali, to harvest at cocoa plantations in Ivory Coast. When this documentary debuted in 2010, it was ten years after the cocoa industry pledged to end child slave labor. But as the film shows, child slave labor remained a big part of the worldwide chocolate industry in 2010 - and still does today.

There will be a simple meal provided - homemade Women's Bean Project soup, cornbread, and dessert. The film & meal will be followed by a short reflective discussion, and information about which chocolate companies are Fair Trade certified - use zero slave labor, pay a living wage, and sincerely work to better the environment and their local communities.
