Lasallian Service Internship (LSI)

Check back in August 2019 for information about LSI 2020!

The Lasallian Service Internship Jan Term course - LSI - has been a tradition at Saint Mary's College since 1985. Formerly called "Christian Service Internship (CSI)," its goal is to provide opportunities for students to engage reflectively in the Lasallian tradition through direct service with poor and marginalized populations, participation in community, and the exploration of these experiences in light of faith.

Each student enrolled in the LSI course spends the Jan Term engaged in service-learning with an organization that works with the underserved and marginalized groups. Students choose from a variety of local, domestic, and international service sites: preschools, elementary, middle and high schools, youth residential programs, orphanages, social service agencies, and community & senior centers.

Students at domestic and international sites live in a Lasallian community at or near the locations where they will be working.  A minimum of 30-40 hours per week of direct service is required, and students are supported through regular meetings with a supervisor. Students must attend the preparatory classes in the fall, and one concluding class in February.

Year after year students have returned from their month of service-learning affirming that the experience has truly been transformative: transforming preconceptions about poverty and the poor; transforming their ideas about faith, service, and community; and transforming the purpose and direction of their own lives. It is for this reason that we say, “The course lasts a month… the experience lasts a lifetime.”

NOTE: There are two LSI courses offered:

  • LSI I - Students who will serve at LOCAL & DOMESTIC locations during January will be enrolled in LSI I (Jan 171 - Instructor: Carrie Davis)

  • LSI II - Students who will serve at INTERNATIONAL locations during January will be enrolled in LSI II (Jan 172 - Instructor: Michael Barram)
