New Program: KSOE Now Offering Bilingual Authorization in Spanish

The Kalmanovitz School of Education’s new program, the Bilingual Authorization in Spanish, is accepting applications and fills a gap in critical bilingual education.

The Bilingual Authorization in Spanish prepares candidates to teach in bilingual, dual-language, and dual-immersion programs from TK through 12th grade.

California needs bilingual teachers. Districts statewide are now expanding their bilingual, dual language, and dual-immersion programs in elementary, middle, and high schools. Bilingual programs enhance students’ learning across the content areas, and graduate students who are bilingual and biliterate and have the cultural competency to engage across differences. By 2030, California has set a goal that half of its K-12 students will participate in programs leading to proficiency in two or more languages. Because bilingual teachers are in high demand, many districts offer additional stipends to teachers with Bilingual Authorizations.

With only three additional courses, teaching students or experienced teachers can add the authorization to the Master of Arts in Teaching or the Multiple Subject, Single Subject, and Education Specialist teaching credentials.

Program highlights:

  • A fully online program designed for busy teachers
  • Courses that support teachers to apply what they’re learning in their own classroom to design innovative and responsive instruction
  • Small classes, taught by responsive faculty who are experienced bilingual teachers
  • A focus on culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy to create rigorous and supportive learning experiences for students

"I've spent most of my career working in bilingual schools in Oakland and know first-hand how urgently we need bilingual teachers in the East Bay," said Dr. Alvarez. It's so exciting to see how state and district policy has shifted in recent years and recognized the value of multilingualism. Now, we need the teachers who can enact this vision and support our youth to develop their multilingualism!"

The Kalmanovitz School of Education is currently accepting applications for Fall 2021 and Spring 2022. Contact Dr. Laura Alvarez, the Bilingual Authorization Program Director, to learn more.
