April 5, 2014 | SMC vs Cal

In what was undoubtedly their best performance of the season so far, the Saint Mary’s Rugby team dominated previously #1 ranked Cal Saturday afternoon, winning 55-31. In this highly anticipated matchup between the #1 ranked Golden Bears and the #4 ranked Gaels, Saint Mary’s scored early and scored often to jump out to a huge lead that proved insurmountable.  “This was a huge game for Cal Rugby.” said Saint Mary’s Coach Tim O’Brien. “Coming off their loss to University of British Colombia we knew they really wanted this game so for us to play as well as we did was very impressive. Cal is a team that score on you in a second, and I thought we did a great job of playing solid team defense and competing. Our guys hung in there and whenever Cal made a play we were able to answer.”  Read more here

March 8, 2014 | SMC vs. BYU

Forced to play a man down for 10 crucial minutes, Saint Mary’s fought valiantly and actually gained ground cutting the lead to 11 at 27-18 on a try by Michael McCarthy. This would be as close as the Gaels would get however, later adding a penalty kick by Audsley but never again making it a one score game. Read more here.

MORAGA, Calif. – The notable winning streak Saint Mary’s has been on thus far in 2014 became that much more impressive after posting a 30-24 victory over Brigham Young University Feb. 15.

February 15, 2014 | SMC v. BYU

MORAGA, Calif. -- The Saint Mary’s rugby team wrote another chapter in its storied history Saturday, downing No. 1-ranked BYU 30-24 at Pat Vincent Field.

With the win, Saint Mary’s once again firmly established itself as one of the pre-eminent rugby programs in the nation. The No. 6-ranked Gaels avenged one of their three losses from last year, and beat the team that Rugby Magazine had ranked best in the nation coming into the game.

“There is a perception of us as a run and gun team.” said Gaels coach Tim O’Brien. “We are a punch you in the mouth type of team. We believe that we can play with anybody in the nation.”

Saint Mary's vs. BYU Highlight Non Conference Matches | USA Rugby Alex Solomon

Saint Mary’s is an elite rugby program, and its 2014 schedule reflects that. In addition to the Bay Area rivalry match against Cal, Saint Mary’s has added a home-and-away against BYU this season. The Gaels have been dominant thus far in 2014, and it remains to be seen if anyone from the California Conference will be able to give them a true test. BYU, on the other hand, will be giving Saint Mary’s all it can handle in its trip to Moraga, Calif. A split in the series would not be surprising, especially if the Gaels can hold serve this weekend playing on their own campus.

Head Coach Tim O’Brien’s squad is once again one of the best teams in the country. That is a statement rugby fans expect out of the 2013 D1A National Championship runner-up. Still, the loss of four graduated USA Rugby AIG Men’s Collegiate All-Americans could stall the momentum of even the sturdiest of programs.

Instead of taking a step backwards, it seems as though Saint Mary’s is as strong as ever. After winning the highly competitive Battle in the Bay Sevens Tournament, Saint Mary’s played its way to the Cup Final of the 2013 USA Rugby College 7s National Championship. Although they lost to Arkansas State, the Gaels’ extremely skilled backline was on display all weekend in Greensboro, N.C., and the rest of college rugby took notice.  Read more here...

January 25, 2014 | SMC v. Olympic Club

The Gaels pulled one out of the fire!  And believe me, it was hot on the pitch today with both sides giving it all they had in a hard fought battle between our Gaels and Olympic Club.  Kingsley McGowan and Garrett Brewer combined for an 80 yard try with McGowan making the break for about 40yds, then passing at just the right moment to Brewer who once again headed for the corner try line, with two defenders in chase, to put it down with no time left on the clock, breaking a 29-29 tie.  Check out photos here.
