Anne M. Carpenter

Overview
Much of my work focuses on the intersection between the symbolic worlds of art, especially poetry, and the rigors of philosophy, especially Thomistic metaphysics. My "guide" through this intersection is the theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar, and to his thinking I have added others to complement and correct him: Bernard Lonergan, Maurice Blondel, Charles Péguy. My other areas of interest include the nature and purpose of Catholic tradition; the relationship between language and meaning; Trinitarian theology and its relationship to history, time, and freedom. In my most recent work, I have begun to use my "old-fashioned" training to fashion new questions around the Catholic Church's involvement in colonialism.
