Zeynep Atalay


Professional Overview: 

Zeynep Atalay is an Associate Professor of Sociology at St. Mary's College of California.  She has received her PhD in Sociology from the University of Maryland in 2012. Her research interests include neoauthoritarianism, civil society, faith-based NGOs, norm diffusion, and political Islam.

In her previous projects, she has studied transnational Islamist NGO coalitions, vernacularization of the civil society by conservative actors, neoliberal governmentality and reproduction of patriarchy, civil society as soft power, and state – trade union partnerships in neoauthoritarian regimes.

She is currently writing her book manuscript on Islamic civil society and authoritarian consolidation in Turkey.
