Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center Facility Policies

 

 

Membership Policies and Eligibility

  1. Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center is onlyavailable for use by currently enrolled Saint Mary’s College of California Students (full-time or part-time) and Staff and Faculty who have registered through Payroll Deduction with Saint Mary’s Human Resources.

  2. Currently Enrolled Students – Access to the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center is granted to all currently enrolled students of Saint Mary’s College of California.

    1. All enrolled students must complete a liability waiver and take a photo, prior to entering the facility.

    2. SMC issued identification is required in order to check-in at the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center. Additional identification may be required to ensure eligibility.

  3. Staff and Faculty – Access to the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center is granted to staff and Faculty who opt in to pay their fee through payroll deduction.

    1. All staff and faculty who choose to opt in must complete and submit a liability waiver and take a photo, prior to entering the facility.

    2. SMC issued identification is required in order to check-in at the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center. Additional identification may be required to ensure eligibility.

  4. Unauthorized Access - the following is strictly prohibited and may lead to suspension of membership.  

    1. Attempting to gain access to the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center with an identification card other than what is your own.

    2. Allowing another individual to utilize your identification to gain access to the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center.

    3. Attempting to utilize an emergency exit door to allow access to unauthorized individuals, non-members, or members alike.

    4. Exiting through emergency exit doors in what is not declared as an actual emergency.

    5. Entering the facility or pool area during non-operational hours

  5. Campus Recreation reserves the right to restrict or suspend access to students who have violated the SMC Student Code and Conduct as outlined in the SMC Student Handbook.

  6. Members must follow policies and regulations as outlined in specific activity areas of the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center.

  7. Throughout the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center, photographers and videographers may be present. All pictures and video footage taken may be used for Campus Recreation or Saint Mary’s College of California’s marketing purposes.

 

General Policies

  1. All members who gain access to the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center must have and active membership.

  2. All members with access participate at their own risk and must complete a liability waiver and take a photo, prior to entering the facility.

  3. Members must follow additional guidelines and regulations as outlined in activity specific areas. These areas include the Single and Double Gymnasium, Fitness Area, Climbing Wall, Group Exercise Room, Functional Training Room, Spin Room and Aquatic Area.

  4. Members who do not adhere to the guidelines may have their access restricted or suspended.

  5. Only water in a resealable, non-breakable container is allowed in the Single and Double Gymnasiums, Fitness Area, Climbing Wall, Group Exercise Room, Functional Training Room, and Spin Room.

  6. Liquid drinks and products associated with sports performance are not permitted in activity spaces and carpeted areas.

  7. Food Consumption is limited to the Café and the pool patio and deck area. Food is not permitted in the activity space and carpeted areas.

  8. Alcohol is never permitted in any areas of the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center.

  9. Smoking is not permitted in the facility

  10. Appropriate clothing is required at all times throughout the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center. A T-shirt, tank-top or alike covering the midsection is required in all activity specific areas. Exposing the midsection in any way is not permitted. Clothing with zippers and/or abrasive material that may damage equipment is prohibited.

  11. Proper footwear is required at all times.

  12. Fitness Area, Functional Training Room, and Spin Room: Closed-toes shoes are required at all times. Prohibited shoes that may present a danger include, but are not limited to boots, sandals/flip-flops, Crocs, flats, and high-heels.

  13. Gymnasiums and Group Exercise Room: Closed-toed, athletic, non-marking shoes are required at all times. Prohibited shoes that may present a danger include, but are not limited to boots, sandals/flip-flops, Crocs, flats, and high-heels.

    1. Bare feet are only permitted in the Group Exercise Room when participating in specific activity classes or fitness sessions in which bare feet are required and will not be subject to direct harm.

  14. Climbing shoes are permitted for use when climbing the climbing wall.

  15. Bare feet are permitted in the Aquatic Area, although walking through the facility requires proper footwear.

  16. Campus Recreation staff reserves the right to judge appropriate footwear.

  17. All personal belongings must be stored away. A limited number of day use lockers are available for personal storage. Personal belongings should remain out of all walkways and paths. All items left unattended will be collected and treated as lost and found.

  18. Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged belongings.

  19. The Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center prohibits use of the facility for Personal Gain. Individuals utilizing the facility for training, coaching, or teaching for personal gain may have their access suspended.

  20. Use of headphones or earbuds is required when playing music from a personal device.

  21. Monopolization of space will not be tolerated in the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center.  All members must adhere to the proper reservation procedures for group use.  

  22. The use of profanity throughout the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center is prohibited.

  23. Service Animals are permitted in the facility. See Undergraduate Student Handbook pages 71-73 for more information.

  24. Fighting and rough play will not be tolerated in the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center. Recurring behavior will result in suspension of member’s membership.

  25. Campus Recreation follows the Zero Tolerance policy for harassment.

  26. Campus Recreation reserves the right to remove individuals who are and/or appear to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

  27. Class projects that include the use of space, photos, videos, and audio must have proper approval prior to taking place.

  28. Videography and Photography must have proper approval before use and will require consent of member(s).

  29. Scooters, rollerblades and skateboards are not permitted to use in the facility. Items must be properly stored away at all times.

  30. Bicycles  are not permitted in the facility.

  31. All amenities past the front entrance desk of the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center are limited to members only. This includes, but is not limited to the water fountain, fitness area, climbing wall, activity spaces, Jamba Juice, pool area, locker rooms and meeting rooms.

  32. Entering and exiting through emergency doors is not permitted.

Fitness Area Policies

  1. Fitness Area is only to be utilized by active Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center members.

  2. Appropriate clothing is required at all times throughout the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center. A T-shirt, tank-top or alike covering the midsection is required in all activity specific areas. Exposing the midsection in any way is not permitted. Clothing with zippers and/or abrasive material that may damage equipment is prohibited.

  3. Proper footwear is required at all times.

  4. Fitness Area: Closed-toes shoes are required at all times. Prohibited shoes that may present a danger include, but are not limited to boots, sandals/flip-flops, Crocs, flats, and high-heels.

  5. Only water in a resealable, non-breakable container is allowed in the Fitness Area.

  6. Food Consumption is limited to the Café and the pool deck area. Food is not permitted in the activity space and/or carpeted areas.

  7. Liquid drinks and products associated with sports performance are not permitted in activity spaces and/or carpeted areas.

  8. Dropping and/or slamming of weights is strictly prohibited. Member must have complete control over the weights at all times.

  9. After all sets are completed in a workout, weights should be returned to the proper rack.

  10. All equipment should be disinfected before and after use. Disinfectant wipes are available to clean equipment.

  11. Member’s personal fitness or exercise equipment must have proper approval and be clearly labeled with owner’s name. If at any time personal fitness equipment presents a danger to oneself or others, member’s use of personal equipment will be denied.

  12. All personal belongings must be stored away. A limited number of day use lockers are available free of charge for personal storage. Personal belongings should remain out of all walkways and paths. All items left unattended will be collected and treated as lost and found.

 

Group Exercise, Functional Training, and Spin Room Policies

  1. The Group Exercise, Functional Training and Spin Rooms are only to be utilized by active Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center members.

  2. All members participating in a fitness session must check in appropriately with Campus Recreation staff.  At times, fitness sessions may be limited to a certain amount of participants.

  3. Appropriate clothing is required at all times throughout the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center. A T-shirt, tank-top or alike covering the midsection is required in all activity specific areas. Exposing the midsection in any way is not permitted. Clothing with zippers and/or abrasive material that may damage equipment is prohibited.

  4. The use of weighted fitness equipment requires closed-toed shoes.

  5. Only non-marking shoes are to be worn in the Group Exercise Room. High heels are prohibited.

  6. Only water in a resealable, non-breakable container is allowed in the Group Exercise, Functional Training, and Spin Rooms.

  7. Food Consumption is limited to the Café, the pool patio and deck area. Food is not permitted in the activity space and/or carpeted areas.

  8. Liquid drinks and products associated with sports performance are not permitted in activity spaces and/or carpeted areas.

  9. Use of headphones or earbuds is required when playing music from a personal device..

  10. Audio equipment is to be used by authorized staff of the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center.

  11. All equipment should be disinfected before and after use. Disinfectant wipes are available and towels to clean equipment.  will be provided.

  12. Member’s personal fitness or exercise equipment must have proper approval and be clearly labeled with owner’s name.   If at any time personal fitness equipment presents a danger to oneself or others, member’s use of personal equipment will be denied.

  13. Group Exercise, Functional Training and Spin Room is available for open recreation in the event that an approved scheduled reservation is not in progress.

  14. Monopolization of space will not be tolerated in the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center.  All members must adhere to the proper reservation procedures for group use.  

 

Double and Single Gymnasium Policies

  1. Gymnasiums are only to be utilized by active Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center members.

  2. Appropriate clothing is required at all times throughout the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center. A T-shirt, tank-top or alike covering the midsection is required in all activity specific areas. Exposing the midsection in any way is not permitted. Clothing with zippers and/or abrasive material that may damage equipment is prohibited.

  3. Proper footwear is required at all times.

  4. Gymnasium:  Closed-toes shoes are required at all times. Prohibited shoes that may present a danger include, but are not limited to boots, sandals/flip-flops, Crocs, flats, and high-heels.

  5. Only water in a resealable, non-breakable container is allowed the Gymnasiums.

  6. Food Consumption is limited to the Café the pool patio and deck area. Food is not permitted in the activity space and/or carpeted areas.

  7. Liquid drinks and products associated with sports performance are not permitted in activity spaces and carpeted areas.

  8. Drop-in Soccer, Volleyball, Badminton, and Basketball will be posted by a predetermined schedule.

  9. All court equipment set-up and take down including the dividers will be the responsibility of the Campus Recreation Staff.

  10. Hanging on rims and/or net is not permitted.

  11. In the Double Gymnasium kicking, bouncing, or throwing balls against walls,   glass walls, and ceilings is not permitted.

  12. In the Single Gymnasium basketballs, dodge balls, volleyballs, and indoor soccer balls are permitted for use. Kicking, bouncing or throwing balls against the ceiling is not permitted.

  13. Member’s personal fitness or exercise equipment must have proper approval and be clearly labeled with owner’s name.  If at any time personal equipment presents a danger to oneself or others, member’s use of personal equipment will be denied.

 

AQUATIC AREA POLICIES

General Facility Policies

  1. All members who gain access to the aquatic area must have an active membership and check in at the front desk.
  2. Unauthorized Access - the following is strictly prohibited and may lead to suspension of membership.  
    1. Entering or exiting through the aquatic area emergency gates.
    2. Entering the aquatic area during non-operational hours.
    3. Opening the emergency gates to allow others to enter the aquatic area.
  3. Appropriate swim attire and proper coverage is required at all times in the aquatic area. Thong bottoms are not allowed. See Campus Recreation Swim Attire Policy.
  4. Alcohol and Drugs are not permitted.
  5. Inappropriate conduct and the use of profanity throughout the aquatic area is prohibited.  Please refer to Disorderly Conduct Policy in Student Handbook Page 9 section 3.
  6. Service Animals are the only animals permitted.  Please refer to Student Handbook pages 71-73.
  7. Photographers and videographers must be approved by management.   
  8. Class projects that include the use of space, photos, videos, and audio must have approval prior to use.
  9. Drones are not permitted in the aquatic area.

  13. Campus Recreation prohibits use of the aquatic area for personal gain. Members are not allowed to  train, coach or teach for personal gain.
  14. All members must adhere to the proper reservation procedures for group use.
  15. Audio equipment in the aquatic area is to be used by authorized staff only.
  16. For amplified music, member or group must have an approved reservation. All music selections must be without the use of profanity.
  17. Members walking through the facility requires proper footwear.
  18. Only certified Lifeguard Employees with Campus Recreation are allowed on the Lifeguard stands and designated lifeguard areas.
  19. Members must adhere to all Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center Policies
  20. Campus Recreation adheres to the rules and regulations as stated in the Saint Mary’s College Student Handbook.

     

Pool Safety Policies

  1. Please Walk.  No running on pool deck.
  2. Members under the influence of drugs and alcohol will be asked to leave the facility.  
  3. Glass containers, gum, shelled nuts, seeds, chewing tobacco and smoking is not permitted in the aquatic area.
  4. Beverages in the aquatic area must be in a clear, sealed, unbreakable container, otherwise lifeguards staff has the authority to inspect beverage.
  5. Consumption of food must be at least 5 feet away from the pool and hydrotherapy spa.
  6. Rough housing, piggyback rides, shoulder rides and/or horseplay is not allowed.
  7. No diving in the shallow end.
  8. Flipping or Twisting off the edge of the deck into the pool is not allowed.
  9. Breath holding underwater for extended periods of time is not allowed.
  10. Hanging on lane separation lines is not permitted.
  11. Kickboards pull buoys and paddles are for lap swimming only. All items are expected to be properly put back after use.
  12. Member’s personal equipment must have proper approval and be clearly labeled with owner’s name.  
  13. Lifeguard staff has the right to remove any persons or equipment that might present a danger to themselves or others.

Diving Board

  1. Only one person on the diving board at a time
  2. Diving area under board must be clear before stepping on the diving board.
  3. Hanging, handstands, cartwheels and sitting on the diving board is not allowed.
  4. Lifeguard staff has the right to ask members not to perform diving board activities that present a danger to themselves or others.

Basketball Hoop

  1. Hanging on backboard, rim/net or dunking on the Basketball Hoop is not allowed.
  2. Shooting while standing or jumping from island or side of deck is not tolerated.
  3. Lifeguard staff has the right to ask members not to play if there is rough housing that presents a danger to themselves or others.  

Hydrotherapy Spa

  1. Those with health conditions should consult with physician before use.
  2. Pool equipment is not allowed in the Hydrotherapy Spa
  3. Diving, jumping, spinning or twisting is not allowed
  4. Breath holding underwater for an extended period of time is not allowed.

Swim Attire Policy: Members in the aquatic area must wear appropriate swim attire with proper coverage at all times. Campus Recreation reserves the right to enforce the swim attire policy if articles of clothing are considered inappropriate or offensive. This is required to ensure safety and a non-disruptive environment.  Please refer to student handbook page 9 section 3.  View samples here. 

 

Day Use Locker Policies

  1. Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center day use lockers are available for all active members participating in recreational activities.

  2. Day use is defined as utilizing the locker during the time in which you are present in the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center and/or participating in Campus Recreation activities.

  3. Campus Recreation does not provide members with locks for lockers.

  4. All locker are available free of charge and are subject to a first come, first serve basis. Lockers cannot be reserved for use.

  5. All lockers will be cleaned out at closing. All locks, which remain on lockers, will be cut off and personal belongings will be considered lost and found.

  6. SMC Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged belongings.

  7. Due to privacy concerns, use of cell phones or cameras of any kind is prohibited in the locker room. All cell phones must be turned off prior to entering the locker room, Unauthorized use of cell phones in locker room may be subject the user to potential restricted use of the facility and or suspension.

  8. If given reason, Public Safety may access lockers.

 

Equipment Checkout Policies

  1. Equipment checkout is only available to active Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center members.

  2. Proper identification must be provided at the time of equipment checkout.

  3. All equipment is checked out on a first come, first serve basis.

  4. Quantity of equipment checked out must be the appropriate amount used by a single person.

  5. Members with an outstanding balance for lost or damaged equipment will not be permitted to checkout additional equipment or have membership suspended until outstanding balance is corrected.

  6. All equipment that is checked out is the responsibility of the member who it was issued to. Only that member may return or exchange equipment.

  7. Items not properly returned by member will result in privilege denied and/or suspension of membership to the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center.  

    1. First offence: Warning of incident

    2. Second offence: Suspension of equipment checkout privileges

    3. Third offence: Suspension of membership.

  8. Replacement fees may be charged in the event that equipment is lost or damaged.

 

 

Reservation Policies

  1. All reservation requests must be submitted 10 days in advance for proper communication and approval.

  2. All requests for use of space in the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center and pool must receive proper approval.   

  3. Prior to approval of pool reservation, member requesting to reserve the pool must meet with management.

  4. The member requesting to reserve space will be notified if the request is approved, approved with modifications, or denied. 

  5. Reservations can be made for a maximum of 2 hours (per day).

  6. Large groups of 10 or more requesting space for more than 2 hours must meet with management.

  7. Members who request space during peak hours may be asked to select a different time.

  8. Reserved space must be used for its intended purpose. An activity space cannot be used as a meeting space.

  9. In order to play amplified music or personal music, member or group must have an approved reservation.

  10. Outside or personal equipment used during reservation must be approved for use.

  11. All participants involved in the reservation must be active members of the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center.

  12. All participants are required to check in appropriately at the front desk with his or her Saint Mary's ID card.

  13. Non-members are not permitted to participate in reserved spaces and activities at the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center.

  14. The member requesting the space is responsible for communicating cancellations and changes to management. Updates and changes can be communicated to the front desk (925) 631-4949.

  15. If an individual or group reservation has multiple absences without communication, future reservations will be cancelled with notification to member.

  16. Changes to a reservation can be made by management at anytime.

 

Lost and Found Policies

  1. All items of value (ex. Phones, keys, wallets, etc.) will be taken to Public Safety.

  2. All non-valuable items (ex. T-shirts, sweatshirts, shoes, etc.) will be collected and stored until the end of the month. At the end of the all non-valuable items will be donated.

  3. SMC Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged belongings.

 

Climbing Wall Policies

  1. Use of the climbing wall is permitted only when area is supervised by Campus Recreation staff.

  2. All users must check in at the back desk and check out appropriate harness equipment.

  3. Proper climbing shoes are required at all times.

  4. Member’s personal climbing equipment must have proper approval and be clearly labeled with owner’s name. If at any time personal equipment presents a danger to oneself or others, member’s use of personal equipment will be denied.

  5. Members who wish to belay are required to be approved. Approved belay members are required to pass a test with Campus Recreation staff and are only allowed to belay others while supervised.

  6. Supervisor has the right to remove any persons or equipment that might present a danger to themselves or others.
