Professional Overview: 

MATTHEW COHEN serves as Production Manager and Lighting Designer for the St. Mary’s Theatre Program as well as Notre Dame de Namur University’s Department of Music and Vocal Arts.
He received his MFA in Theatre Management from UCLA and completed additional graduate studies in Lighting Design with Gil Hemsley at University of Wisconsin, Madison, and Joan Arhelger at San Francisco State University.
Matthew began his career at 19 at McCarter Theatre under the tutelage of John Lithgow. Upon graduating college he became production stage manager for Berkeley Repertory Theatre and later Production Manager and Associate Producer. Matthew left Berkeley Rep after eight years to become the first Executive Director of the New Performance Gallery (now ODC Performance Gallery). At New Performance Gallery, he presented the first Bay Area performances of the Mark Morris Group, Susan Marshall, and Douglas Dunn, among others.
As an independent producer, he brought Bill Irwin’s REGARD OF FLIGHT to the stage, which was presented across the United States and seen on PBS Great Performances.

He has designed lighting for Shotgun Players, Marin Theatre Company, Lorraine Hansberry Theatre, El Teatro de Danza Contemporanea, Orquestra Juvenil de El Salvador, and the Douglas Morrison Theatre, among others.

In 2007, Matthew established the Lighting Artists in Dance (LAD) awards whose mission is to provide funds for innovate lighting/dance projects in the Bay Area. In the last eight years, the program has awarded $80,000 through Dancers Group.
